5 essential things that OFW parents must do for their children

Parenting is not easy especially when you are working miles away from them. There are a lot of things that  you are more willing to do for them but you can't because of the distance. However, as  parents, we should not stop showing them how much we love them regardless of circumstances.

So if you are one of those who are struggling to become a good parent from afar, let me share with you some of what I learned as a OFW parent.  Here are 5 essential things that OFW parents must do for their children.

1.TRUST THEM ➤Trust is important when raising a child. As parents, we always tell to our children to trust us in everything we do because it's for their own good. But we must also trust our children in their decisions. It's a mutual thing. When your child says he did not do the thing he was accused of then trust him, and ask someone to investigate the truth. Maybe your child is telling the truth. Also, your child will realize that you would listen every time. But of course trust should be given depending on some circumstances and child's age. You are still the parent and you knows what is best for your children.

2.FEED THEM Let's face the fact that in the Philippines, poverty is everywhere and many children have died due to malnutrition. While other children are enjoying a healthy meal prepared by their mothers, others are starving because their parents do not have the money to buy food. Also, many children with 8 or more siblings have parents who are unfortunate to send them school or even a proper and healthy meal.

Moreover, It is your obligation as a parent to feed them. As a result, many parents had to leave their families to try their luck outside the country to be able to support them financially. It is because we don't want our families especially the kids to die in starvation.

3.HEAR THEM OUT When your child has a story to tell about anything, make sure that you will listen and let them talk. Be your child's best friend. Also, don't interrupt while their talking. Teach them not to hide anything from you. Before your child tells to others about any personal matters, you should be the first to know it.

It is not easy since you are in abroad, but believe me everything is possible. You just need to hear them out, let them speak and if you find something inappropriate or incorrect then try to rectify it in a nice way. At times, you can also ask them for an advice if you are into problem or situation, who knows your child can help you out. Remember that children have an honest perspective of everything.

4.EDUCATE THEM Since you are not there to teach them in their school homework or projects, you are trying to at least guide them in their studies in any way you can. This is more challenging in your part, but there's always a way. As I have always said in my previous posts, communication is the key to effective long-distance parenting. Get in touch with them in a regular basis. Ask them about their studies, ask them if they need help in a certain subject or they need some support. Also try to motivate your kids to study well but don't overdo it.

Teach them how to balance life. Rather than go crazy over your child's grades, why don't you help them to balance their life with friendships, studies and other activities. Don't put too much pressure towards their studies. Avoid to be a toxic parent, if you know what I mean. Reward them if they do something good at school.

5.CIVILIZE THEM ➤Manners still matter. Remember the golden rule, the principle of treating others as one's self would wish to be treated. So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them. Remind your children constantly about this life's golden rule. Teach them of good manners and right conduct.

Be kind, polite and caring to others, as your kids will imitate whatever they see in you. Be a great role model to your kids. Whenever you have time, make it a point that you are showing them or educating them how to socialize and be civilize.

The bottom line is that the best way to show your love to your children is to walk it like you talk it. It is a modern version of practice what you preach. Am  I clear now? I hope you find my post useful.
